Salisbury, England
Today was a driving day. The GPS said
it should take about 4 hours. It took 8 due to heavy stop and go
traffic for large parts of the trip.
I did go through Dartmoor National
Park. Much of it is open, grass and heather covered hills with lots
of grazing sheep. But some is through thick woodlands:
Yes, the road is as narrow as it
looks. This, actually is a wider section. You can tell because of
the center markings. If there is no centerline, it's too narrow for
cars to pass each other at speed and you need to slow down.
Finally, I got to the hotel:
This part was built in the 1300's. The
rest was added on in the 1500s-1700s. Inside it's quite modern and
there is parking behind. It's right on the Avon River (again). This
picture was taken from the bridge just around the corner. The white
building on the left bank is the hotel restaurant.
It seems almost every building here is
old. At one end of the bridge over the river is a buiding with a
“toll house” sign. It looks to be at least 500 years old. Just
beyond that is a hospital yard. The plaque says it was established
in the 1200's.
Ahh, if those hotel wall could talk.. They would prolly talk forever! 700 years, wow! I would also get caught up in the history of the place, but maybe try my luck on the Avon..
